Never one to follow usual fashion trends or gender stereotypes, I not only wanted to design unique, alternative and artistic clothing, that is not available through the dominating mainstream brands and retailers, but also wanted to create clothing which supported sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, that promoted the recycling and reuse of natural fibres and reduced waste and the finite consumption of worldwide resources.<\/p>

Sustainability<\/h2>
\"Waste not, want not\"<\/strong><\/h2><\/blockquote>
Traditionally , the fashion industry produces clothes speculatively on estimated sales figures, before anything has been sold or ordered. This ends up with 40% of clothing that is produced, being thrown away into landfill without ever being used or worn. Arcanemy clothing is produced on-demand once orders have been placed. We have no excess waste or stock entering landfill through this practice, and use digital technology so that designs are consistent and orders can be processed and shipped 30% more efficiently, in a matter of minutes, so there are no delays in getting your items to you.<\/p>
\"99% of clothes aren\u2019t recycled. Welcome to the 1%\"<\/strong><\/h2><\/blockquote>
Most clothing is produced with a linear model. Products are made, used, worn and then eventually thrown into landfill. Over 2 billion tons of waste a year enter landfill sites. Not only is this damaging for the environment, all products are made up of materials, that, like all resources on Earth, are finite and valuable. Our suppliers and production facilities have designed their clothing production system to be circular, where new products are made from worn out material so we make new items from the old ones.<\/p>
\"In 2050 it is believed there will be more plastic than fish in the sea\"<\/strong><\/h2><\/blockquote>
With this in mind, we are plastic free! Your designs are printed on super soft certified organic cotton fibres, rather than the all-too-common polyester, which is made from oil and pollutes our environment . The use of synthetic fibres has gone up by 60%. Over time these clothes release the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles of micro plastic particles each year, which are released into our waterways and enter every food chain on the planet. These particles do not breakdown for thousands of years and cannot be removed by nature. To reduce our impact, we only use natural inks and fibres and ship all items in plastic-free, plant-based, recyclable, and biodegradable packaging that is still rip and splash-proof, to keep orders safe. It has also been designed so it can be reused by customers: as gift wrapping, as a colouring book, or even as part of an art project.<\/p>

All our facilities are powered by renewable energy<\/h2><\/blockquote>
We power all our factories and manufacturing facilities with renewable solar and wind energy. Renewable sources of energy minimise pollution, and do not contribute to global warming like the traditional use of burning fossil fuels. We are also carbon neutral and have tree planting programmes which, not only creates local jobs and supports the restoration of forests and natural ecosystems, it also increases the natural absorption of CO2 from the atmosphere, offsetting our carbon footprint, allowing our product life cycle to be net zero.<\/p>
Nothing goes to waste<\/strong><\/h2>
All our clothes are made from organic cotton, and are GOTS certified. Cotton is a natural, durable and comfortable material that is highly absorbent and easy to dye. The largest issue with cotton production is the amount of water required for it to grow. Our cotton is grown in the north of India were natural occurring monsoons water our crops and fill reservoirs without the need for irrigation. Our famers separate the fibres suitable for clothing from the unusable cotton seeds, which are then pressed and fed to the cows who produce natural fertiliser for the crops. Every part of the plant is used and nothing goes to waste!<\/p>
Water clean enough to drink<\/strong><\/h2>
Water is one of the world's most precious resources. Our production facilities have a completely closed-loop water recycling system. The water used to dye our clothes remains in the factory and is not released into local waterways. The water is recovered, filtered, cleaned and recirculated. The water left is clean enough to drink, and the separated dye particles are re-used for road markings.<\/p>
Remilled clothes and how to recycle<\/strong><\/h2>
The majority of clothes are worn less than ten times before being thrown away. In the UK alone 300,000 tonnes of clothing ends up in household bins each year. Using quality materials and creating good clothing means we not only extend the life of each item of clothing, but also allows us to make new items from the old.<\/p>
